At the Normal Cafe - Part 1 - Mosquito

So, inspired by some recent progress on a long-form story "At the Normal Cafe", I've decided to release it into the wild, as a short serial. Luckily, the great folks over at Thrillers, Killers n' Chillers are happily giving me enough rope to hang myself. The first part is called "Mosquito" and you can read it here.

I haven't been one to talk obsessively about the process behind the stories, but one simple note on this piece. I'm going for "Noir" meets "Rashamon". By all means, let me know how it works for you.

Thanks for reading.

Season's Greetings.

Thanks to everyone who has visited this blog this year, to see more of my writing, or after reading my bio on one site or another.

The comments and support I've received have been phenomenal, and for that I also say thanks. There's a wonderful "Flash" community out there, and it has been my pleasure to correspond with several great new writers.

Wishing all the readers and writers out there a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Peaceful Quanzaa, and a Kick-Ass Boxing Day.

Looking forward to more great stories to read, and hopefully a few more of my own out there in 2010.

Best of the Season to all.

Thanks for reading.

Code Mustard - We have Holidays.

Hey all. New story up on Everyday Fiction today. "Code Mustard" for a wonderous change of pace is neither horror, nor crime, which means it was excruciating to write.
In other news, still picking away at the longer short (wondering at what point it leaves "short story land"). Also a few other things percolating.

**Cross-Props** - It's holiday week at the office. So if you're looking for something to divert you ... check out "The Osseus Box" Saga at Thrillers, Killers & Chillers. It's a tightly paced mythos-laden-gritty-(sometimes shocking!)-horror-cops-n-bad-guys-story. Part 12 was posted last week, and does not disappoint. It's written by The Hardest Working Mann on the Isle - Lee Hughes. Lee also has the whole series up on his website: www.leehughes.net

An update

Got a rejection on "The Fear Box" from a pretty popular horror site. That's strike two for that piece, but both notices have come with an abundance of notes - which is rare and very cool. I will place that piece, and it will kill. This one actually compared the story to something by Richard Matheson, so I'm definitely not giving up on it.

In other news, the writer's group is up and running. Two pieces on the block so far, hopefully more to come!

In new stuff, I started a historical fantasy piece. It was meant to be a one-off flash piece centred around a bar-joke, but it's grown some legs. Seeing where it goes.

The (Moderately Grand?) Experiment

So- I've been toying with an idea for some time now, and I'd like to see if I can get it to work.

Introducing - The Canadian Online Writer's Workshop (Crit-Club). Never mind the name, it's "Canadian" because I am, but it's open to anyone, anywhere.

I've set up another "Blogger" site, that will be open by invitation only. Members will be able to share works in progress, and get feedback from other members. They'll then be able to use (or ignore) the suggestions, and still be able to sell their work as "unpublished." While most of the writers I've had the honour to have contact with of late need no help in the "Flashfic" department, this would be a great place to start workshopping longer stuff. That said, anything and everything will be welcome (within a couple of common-sense limits.)

If you're interested, email me at criticclub@gmail.com . If you're not ... thanks for reading this site!

Acceptance - Profiteering in the Wake of the Inevitable Zombpocalypse

Just got the notice- I got a story into the upcoming anthology, "The Moron's Guide to the Inevitable Zombpocalypse" Very very happy about that.

I wrote it during a 5-6 week period when all I was writing was Zombies.

It's a Library of Horror Publication.

More details as I get 'em!

New Story at MicroHorror today

It's called "Everything is Elemental". I feel I veered perilously close to that awful label of "torture-porn" on this, but ultimately, I think the plot carries it through.

This all comes from remembering being 16 and stuck in chemistry class.

To reprint - or not reprint?

During NaNoWriMo, I wasn't writing anything for the flash sites, but decided, since most are okay with reprints, to spread some of my favorites around. I figure not everyone reads every site, and I liked these ones well enough to try and increase the readership a bit.

The first was Kittens for Sale, which popped up on Flashes in the Dark last week.

This week, it's In the Kingdom of Ephemera which was first up on Static Movement. Today it makes an appearance on MicroHorror.

If you've read it before - you can skip this, it's verbatim. If not - I think it's a fun little piece. It literally was a day at the beach to write.

Thanks for reading.

Tis the Season

December's here, and as previously mentioned, I'm putting the ominous task of edits and rewrites on "Troll" to the side until 2010.

However, also as promised, I'm getting back to some flash pieces this month.

The habit of pounding out words every day is hard to break, and this one just poured out in a single go - Bumblef*cked is up at Thrillers, Killers & Chillers now.

Thanks for reading!
